the liberty ship

During the war Grandpa John Babcock worked on a liberty ship as a welder, actually he was a teacher of welders who worked on liberty ships. Supposedly one was built in 9 days plus, but this one was built in about 59 days. Ken was really interested in touring this ship and took a lot of pictures, even pictures of pictures.
You had to climb a ladder to get to the guns.
Simon really enjoyed being on the ship, climbing around etc.
The bunk rooms were almost as small as the Alcatraz cells. Two to three men slept in each one though and they could come and go or at least walk around the ship. Interesting to think of a ship as a kind of prison though. Water makes good walls.
Simon found himself in desperate need of a restroom, and the ship had one or two. It made Becca a little nervous when he went in one and shut the door. He was in there a looong time. And then he found that he had locked himself in. The dead bolt wasn't as easy to open as it was to close. Becca pulled on the door and he was able to get it open.
The engine room went down three stories. Evidently parts of the film "Titanic" were filled in the engine room.

They tried to make the ship look like it was still in use, with paint cans etc. on the shelves.

This was the point when Simon finally got the door open. Becca was very happy. Also happy that the toilet flushed away the evidence.
I think they called Wendy the welder instead of Rosie the riveter.
Yes, they did have jeeps on the ships.

I remember Grandpa telling a story about how he saved a ship. Do you know the details? Something about how it was just built and was getting launched, but some cables were still attached. They would have done a lot of damage to the ship and no one but John saw it. He ran and grabbed a welder and cut the cable in the nick of time. He was some kind of hero.

I remember when we were in San Francisco together he very much wanted to visit a monument to the welders (I believe). He was very sober and stood there a long time. Anyone know what that was?

I remember hearing the story. Ken could tell it. He's still asleep. I was to bed by 8:30 and up by 5:00. He stayed up to read so our schedules are a couple of hours off.
