story ideas

In an old journal I recently came across a couple of pages of story ideas. For the first time I figured out one of my problems in writing. I begin with message instead of with story or character. A focus on message is way too pedantic and lifeless to inspire me to write. In my reading, story and character matter most to me. I wonder if I could change my approach and enjoy the process.
